Residential Services

Children and Adult Profiles

Sunbeam Lodge provides a high level of medical and custodial care to infants, children, youth and young adults who have a variety of special needs.  Our facility is specially designed and equipped with all necessary technology and medical equipment to support technologically dependent children, especially those with Lifetime Neuro Developmental Disorders requiring specialized nursing care.  Our children and young adults have many different diagnoses which are known as, but not limited to; Cerebral Palsy, Angelmann’s Syndrome, Pierre Robin Sequence, Spina Bifida, Chromosomal Deletion, Neurodegenerative Disorders,  Kleinfelters Syndrome, consequences form an acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury and many more. Not all of our residents are intellectually challenged.  Cognitive levels can range from no delay to severely delayed.    

Sunbeam Lodge provides many diverse placement formats for admission of infants, children or youth. They include long term care, transitional care from hospital to home, foster care or community and respite care.

Clinical Resources

Our Onsite Resources Include:

A Family Physician who visits a minimum of once every 2 weeks, annual Neurology clinics, bi- annual Orthopedic clinics, bi-annual Paediatric Nutrition clinics, bi-annual Optometry clinics and bi-annual Dental assessments. We are pleased to provide our children with a multidisciplinary team approach for their most crucial medical needs through these resources along with others not listed..

Community Resources Include:

We are rich in onsite resources and visiting consultations with access to therapeutic and rehabilitative services through CCAC, such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Dietary services.  Where it is indicated, our children will have access to the Infant Development Program through the Region of Waterloo, Services through Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Kidsability Centre for Child Development.  Seating and mobility clinics occur regularly onsite with an Occupational Therapist for those that require special services, custom molds, fittings and assessments.

Hospital Access:

Sunbeam Lodge is in immediate proximity to Cambridge Memorial Hospital and Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital both located in Kitchener.  Although McMaster Children’s Hospital is a short 55 kilometres away, we have access to Victoria Children’s Hospital in London, the Hospital for Sick Children and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto.  We strive in retaining all previous and ongoing connections for specialized treatments and assessments involved in the medical profile of each child, even after a child is placed in our home.
